Titles II and III of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Pub. L. 101-336, 42 U.S.C. 12131-12134 and 12181-12189, prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability by public entities and in places of public accommodation and commercial facilities.  The Department of Justice published its final rules implementing titles II and III in 1991.  Accessibility standards have been developed to assure compliance with the ADA requirements.

The available document in this collection covers new construction alterations for public accommodations and commercial facilities related to the ADA accessibility.  Design and technical specification requirements relating to ADA accessibility are included in this document for items such as:  drinking water fountains, sinks, windows, doors, telephones, and benches in facilities such as restaurants and cafeterias, medical care facilities, libraries, and businesses.
