For almost 100 years, AGMA has been dedicated to helping members compete effectively in the global marketplace. Initially founded by nine US gear companies, AGMA is now a global organization representing about 400 companies in the gear industry from more than 30 countries. AGMA provides its members with services and programs related to both technical standards and business and management practices.

AGMA offers gear industry technical and management information through newsletters, technical paper, and events including an annual Technical Meeting where gear topics such as design theory and manufacturing are discussed and a biennial trade show designed exclusively for the gear industry. AGMA also provides the gear industry a voice in the development of ISO standards and in Washington DC through the National Association or Manufacturers.

AGMA develops and participates on development teams to generate voluntary standards for use worldwide by gear designers, gear manufacturers, and gear service and maintenance professions. AGMA gear standards provide information sheets, handbooks, and manuals covering design of various types of gears, gear testing, gear materials, specifications for gears.
